Warmth!

At long last we are warm.  We put a new furnace in shortly after we moved in - a wood oil/combination.  This was supposed to reduce our heating costs.  Unfortunately that didn't happen.  Turns out the new furnace was too small and not able to heat the house properly.  Compounding this problem was the very limited duct work in the house, only two ducts go to the second floor and only one of these put out any real heat (each was shared between two rooms).  That left a bedroom and a bathroom without any source of heat.  The carriage house wasn't served by this system at all.  Needless to say, we were cold (the baby's room would sometimes be 12 degrees Celsius in the morning).

So with a new contractor, we had a proper heat loss calculation performed on both buildings.  Christina and I chose old rads to fit each room and we ordered them from Iron Works Radiators in Toronto (they were great).  We then installed a new Weil-Mclain propane boiler - Haven Home ClimateCare in Kingston took care of assembling the boiler and system.  It's been in for nearly a month now and is working very well.  We've got four zones, two per floor so different rooms may be at different temperatures.  Later this year or next we will expand the system into the carriage house.
